Mian Allah Nawaz

Mian Allah Nawaz is a former Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court. During his tenure as the judge of the LHC, Mian sahib presided over the tax bench of the High Court for over 5 years. For their juristic value numerous of his authored judgments are reported in the professional journals and cited in legal proceedings.

Mian sahib entered the legal profession in 1964 after apprenticing with Justice Akhlaq Hussain – a very respected jurist of his times. Before being appointed as Judge of the Lahore High Court, Mian sahib was practicing law at Bahawalpur where he was elected as President of Bahawalpur High Court Bar Association in 1982 and as President of the District Bar Association Bahawalpur in 1975.

He has taught laws at Islamia University , Bahawalpur , the Punjab University , Lahore and Pakistan Law College , Lahore . He extensively lectures in various national institutions on the legal and social issues of national importance. He specializes in constitutional law, income tax, corporate tax, private international law, commercial law, ADR, property laws and Islamic laws.

Aziz Nishtar MPA (QAU), LLB (Kar), LLM (Harvard)

A Harvard Law School graduate Aziz is a former Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax Group of Civil Services of Pakistan from where he resigned in November 2002 after 15 years of service. He has extensively supervised tax audits of large corporations including multinational enterprises doing business in Pakistan.

At Harvard University, in addition to his Master of Laws (LL.M.) he completed a postgraduate certificate program in international taxation and participated in two extensive workshops on financial derivatives and international transfer pricing. At Harvard he also attended a 6-week summer school on US Federal Income Taxation and Taxation Policy. His areas of specialization include: income and corporate taxation, sales tax, corporate law, aviation, and alternate dispute resolution.

In addition to his civil service exposure Aziz has rich experience of working with different corporations including Tax Analyst, Inc., A Virginia, USA-based tax law publishing company; Engro Chemical Pakistan Limited (formerly Exxon Chemical Pakistan Limited); Pakistan International Airlines; and a brief stint at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC.

Aziz has extensively written on the international tax issues and developments for the international professional journals. He is a regular contributor and correspondent on tax-related legal and administrative developments in the Middle East and South Asia for the Tax Notes International, a highly respected weekly publication from Virginia, USA and its sister web-based publication Worldwide Tax Daily.

Aziz earned his LL.B. from the University of Karachi; MPA from the Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad; and BA from Islamia University, Bahawalpur.

Zafarullah Khan MSc, PGD (Law), LLB (Hons, UK), Bar-at-Law (Lincoln's Inn)

Trained as Barrister-at-Law at the world renowned Lincoln's Inn in the UK, Zafarullah Khan specializes in: human rights, criminal law, service matters, corporate affairs, property laws, petroleum laws, alternate dispute resolution, and constitutional law. Before being called to the Bar in 1998 he did BA from Multan University in 1981, MSc in International Relations from the Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad in 1985, LLB (Hons) from the City University, London in 1997 and Postgraduate Diploma in law from the University of the West of the England, Bristol, UK in 1998 .

Zafar is a former officer of the District Management Group of the Civil Service of Pakistan which he joined in 1987. After a comprehensive training in public administration and laws at the Civil Service Academy, he served in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab as Assistant Commissioner, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Deputy Secretary, and Additional Secretary in various departments and as Administrator (Mayor) of various municipal committees and corporations. He resigned from the civil service on 14th August 2002 to work for the rule of law and human rights

Zafar has taught international relations at the International Islamic University, Islamabad from 1985 to 1987. He also has taught law at the Civil Service Academy, Lahore , University of the Punjab and the Punjab Law College, Lahore. He is on the visiting faculty of the Iqra University, Islamabad. His publications include a book on 'Human Rights' and a 7- volume study on 'Compilation and Revision of Child-Related Laws of Pakistan' and numerous articles on the legal issues and international relations. Zafar has the honour of representing Pakistan before the 'United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child' in Geneva in September 2003.

Anser Ali, MBA, DAIBP, MPA (Columbia)

Anser is a graduate of Columbia University , New York , USA , has an MBA from IBA, Karachi and holds DAIBP designation.

Anser is a former civil servant and quasi-judicial officer and has diverse experience encompassing international business and finance, which he acquired as a commercial banker, an investment banker, and the top finance and legal affairs executive with an American energy and natural resource company developing a billion dollars project in Pakistan, whom he still serves as the top advisor to their Chairman and CEO.

Anser served as the first Pakistani Managing Editor, in 60 years, of the prestigious Journal of International Affairs. During his tenure with JIA, he published a single-topic issue on Law of the Sea (Vol. 59.2) and also organized a conference in New York on the subject. He co-authored and presented an especially commissioned paper at the World Bank sponsored international conference on Ethics at Oxford University in April 2006.

Anser received a teaching fellowship for Public Finance and Financial Management at Columbia University .

His areas of interest in practice, writing, and teaching include; Public-Private Partnerships, Energy and Infrastructure, Structured Finance and Asset-Backed Securitization, Islamic Financial Instruments, Alternative Investments, and Negotiations.

He has worked for and advised on energy and infrastructure projects ranging from US$ 100 million to over a billion dollars and has structured and modeled debt and equity issues worth hundreds of million Pak Rupees.

Anser is a trained negotiator and has successfully concluded a number of contracts and controversies for his clients.

Allah Bakhsh Leghari


With a Masters degree in Islamic Studies and an LLB Leghari has a very strong understanding of law in Islamic perspective in addition to English tradition of Common Law. He joined our team recently after completing his LLB degree in 2006. He did his BA from the prestigious Government College, Lahore after which he joined the University of Punjab for further education. At the Punjab University he very actively participated in student welfare and development activities in addition to his usual pursuit of studies.

In law his areas of specialization are: income and sales taxation, civil, corporate, and Islamic finance. He manages our Lahore office.

Muhammad Farooq

Farooq has done his Master of Commerce and Bachelor of Commerce degrees from the prestigious Hailey College of Commerce, a component college of the University of Punjab . After doing his M.Com., he joined the Punjab University Law College from where he completed his LLB in 2005. A very intelligent young lawyer, Farooq works on taxation, civil and corporate law assignments and has proven his mettle right from the early days of his legal career. He has served as the first Company Secretary of Takaful pakistan Limited.

Muhammad Bilal Lakha

Bilal is an honour graduate in law and shariah from the International Islamic University, Islamabad. Before joining Nishtar & Zafar he has worked with the chamber of renowned Pakistani lawyer Mr. Aziz A. Munshi for 3 years. Licensed to the practice at the High Court level, Bilal's is basically a litigator with special interest in civil law, contracts, property, corporate law, and Islamic financial laws and practices.

Nadeem Yasin

In addition to being a lawyer, Nadeem is an accomplished accountant and is associate member of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan. He has done his LL.B. and LL.M from the S. M. Law College, Karachi. Before joining us he was a senior inspector of direct taxes with the Income Tax Department where he has worked for more than 12 years. With his strong background in accountancy and law, Nadeem is an expert on engineering transactions to achieve tax efficiencies both in the income taxation as well as sales tax arena.

Muhammad Ali

Ali has recently completed his his Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the Georgetown University where he was a prestigious Jakson Fellow working on the WTO issues. Before going to the Georgetown he has bagged a UK LL.M. from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the London University specializing in international trade and intellectual property related laws. He is an accomplished legal resource on the issue of WTO related matters and IP issues in Pakistan in the international perspective. He did his LL.B. fro m the University of Karachi and his BA from University of the Punjab, Lahore. He advises the clients on WTO regime, intellectual property, corporate law, and international trade law.
